Hugh Graham repurposes tartan offcuts to make rugs and bags. Clan and plaid patterns are cut into strips and twined together creating new and unique weaves. Celebrating the imperfect beauty of the handmade he recreates a memory of watching his his grandmother’s neighbour, a retired shepherd in the late 1950’s, make rugs on a simple wooden frame from materials gathered from his local surroundings. Living in the West End of Glasgow, Hugh works in a similar way with materials obtained locally using traditional tools and rag rugging techniques. He shows his rugs and bags at craft fairs and other venues and is keen to share the wellbeing benefits of being a maker, keeping a traditional craft alive in today’s fast and technologically driven society.
